Halloween Costumes for Horses

We look forward to our barns annual Halloween contest. Our daughter starts thinking about it a few months ahead. We are fortunate that our horse is very patient and has a good temper. It’s very important that you understand your horses “likes” and “dislikes”. Our horse does not like his tail and backend touched (we keep fabrics away from there). The easiest and safest thing to start with when building your costume is purchasing a “Slinky” or “Sleazy” for the horse’s head. We usually buy fleece to act as a saddle pad and to color the horse. We will make our own polo wraps out of the same fleece and attach Velcro to them. You can use many other materials to customize your costume, foam, fabrics, ribbons, felt, tulle, pre-made patches, etc…. We try to not attach the costume pieces permanently, this way we can use the hoods for the winter or other costumes. When dressing the horse make sure your accessories are secure and will not fall over the eyes, or fall at their feet.
